Future Energy and Biomass Solutions – Seminar

Published

The seminar organized by the Research Council of Finland provides a comprehensive overview of how energy and biomass sciences can together guide Finland towards a carbon-neutral future. The seminar approaches the topic from the perspectives of research and technological solutions, while also emphasizing the importance of societal dialogue. The seminar will take place on 15 April 2026 at Messukeskus Helsinki, Hall 2, as part of the ChemBio Finland 2026.

The seminar is chaired by Leading Science Advisor Saila Seppo. The event will be opened by Director Floora Ruokonen, followed by Professor Marc O’Malley, who will discuss the long-term outlook for sustainable energy production. Doctor of Science (Chemistry) Tooran Khazraie will continue with a focus on sustainable utilization of forest biomass. Business Finland will then present its programme on flexible energy systems. After the morning presentations, participants will have the opportunity to explore poster sessions and network during lunch.

In the afternoon, the programme continues with four facilitated panel discussions featuring representatives from projects funded by the Research Council of Finland. These projects collaborate with Business Finland’s Flexible Energy Systems programme. The background of the cooperation between the Research Council of Finland and Business Finland has been discussed in a blog by Director General Paula Eerola.

The panels address key aspects of energy production and consumption, as well as the sustainable use of forest biomass. Topics include electricity system flexibility and consumer behaviour, transparency and sustainability of bioeconomy value chains, the impact of cold climate conditions on renewable energy, and the role of industry in deep decarbonisation. Each panel begins with project presentations and continues with a discussion on the theme.

The event is intended for anyone interested in energy innovations, the bioeconomy, and new opportunities in the sustainable transition. Throughout the day, poster sessions and lunch discussions provide excellent opportunities for networking and finding new collaboration partners. Participants will also have the chance to explore ongoing research projects that can serve as a foundation for future initiatives and cooperation.
